Gartner Names RELEX as a ‘Cool Vendor in In-memory Computing Technologies, 2014’

Gartner, the global research and advisory company, has named RELEX as one of four companies included in its 2014 Cool Vendors list for its use of in-memory computing technologies. RELEX is the only one in the report operating in the supply chain planning domain.

According to Gartner’s report ‘Cool Vendors in In-Memory Computing Technologies, 2014’ (11 April 2014): “In-memory computing (IMC) technology is increasingly emerging as a key enabler for the digital business by empowering the agility, Web-scale processing and fast decision making needed to respond to the business challenges of the digital era.”

In-memory computing holds all data and performs all calculations within the computer’s active (RAM) memory and avoids the need for data to cycle between RAM and hard disk storage. The technique allows far greater quantities of data to be processed and at far higher speeds thus opening up the reality of analysing vast data flows in real time.

RELEX has tapped into the power of in-memory computing through its proprietary technology that includes a database specially created for supply chain applications, which improves performance over 100 times compared to traditional alternatives. This is vital to handle complex calculations involving thousands of product lines and hundreds of stores and depots and the millions of variables that result.

“We’re delighted to have been chosen as a ‘Cool Vendor 2014’ by Gartner for in-memory computing,” says RELEX MD Mikko Kärkkäinen. “In-memory technology is a vital part of our systems and underpins everything else we do.”

“Being able to get immediate results from vast flows of data allows for rapid implementation because with every change you make you see the results instantly. Likewise it makes it easy for our clients to make changes post-implementation. Changes can be done very simply through the UI because they know straight away if the change was what they wanted. And they can make almost every change they want independently of us,” Kärkkäinen adds.

Gartner’s report recommends that buyers; “mitigate the risk of adopting IMC technology from small players by using their products on projects that can pay themselves off in three to four years.”

Kärkkäinen believes that companies will be pleased with what RELEX can offer. “With RELEX payback times are typically three to four months, not years as is often the case! That should tell most potential clients much of what they need to know.”
