Finding Purpose in Code: Gesiane’s Story

How a boring job at a drugstore led to a thriving tech career and why RELEX became the perfect place to grow.
Sometimes the best career changes start with a simple thought: there has to be a better way to do this. For Gesiane Pajarinen, Cloud Engineer at RELEX, that moment came while working in a pharmacy in Brazil, when she was faced with repetitive tasks that seemed ripe for automation.
“I had lots of boring jobs, very repetitive,” Gesiane recalls. “And then I thought, why am I doing this? It must have some applications that I could use to make it easier.” When she couldn’t find the right tool, she decided to build it herself – teaching herself programming from scratch.
That decision transformed her life. “I loved it so much that I decided to go for a second degree,” she says. Gesiane pursued a degree in systems development, quit her pharmacy job, landed an internship, and never looked back. “For me, it was the best thing I did.”
The best part? “Funny thing is that the application that I had in mind for the pharmacy, I actually never built it, even under desperate requests from my fellow pharmacists.”
Amongst so many different people, you are allowed to be different.
Building the Future of Supply Chain Tech
Today, Gesiane works as a Cloud Engineer in RELEX’s Infra team, focusing on a new application opportunity area. Her role centers on automation and deployment, – making it easier for development teams to get their work into production smoothly.
“My job is to automate and to make deployment for the application easy,” she explains. What makes the role particularly engaging is its breadth: “Being a cloud engineer right now, I have the opportunity to work a little bit in different areas. A little bit is DevOps. But then a little bit with networking, with automation. I need to deal with databases.”
This variety gives her something she values deeply: “I can get a more high-level knowledge of the whole system and be able to contribute more with new ideas.”
Her team is making real progress sprint by sprint. “I’m really proud about how our team is integrated and how everybody communicates with everybody, and how we are building and enhancing this feature,” she says. The impact is tangible – more customers are adopting the features her team develops, and the deployment processes are becoming increasingly streamlined.
The RELEX Product: Making a Real Difference
For Gesiane, working at RELEX means contributing to something meaningful. She’s heard directly from customers about the difference the RELEX platform makes: “The whole system is much easier to use. The company provides better customer service. And it really brings a different outcome to avoid waste.”
That mission resonates with her. “These bring warmth to the heart,” she reflects. “It’s something fantastic.”
Being RELEX means being myself and doing what I love – working with the cloud, programming, automating, staying curious, and constantly expanding my knowledge. And above all, contributing to something meaningful.
A Culture That Encourages Growth
One of the unique opportunities at RELEX caught Gesiane’s attention early on: role rotation . “There is this opportunity for rotation,” she explains. “If I am interested in getting to know more of a different department, it’s just to check with my manager, the manager of the other department, to see if exchange is possible.”
She sees this as crucial for breaking out of silos. “At RELEX, the product is so big, but sometimes you get so cozy in your box, in your team. It’s interesting to know what’s around outside of that. Who is using what, what are they working on.”
RELEX also provides resources and guidance for career progression. “I think the company gives you total freedom for that. Resources, guidance,” she says. “I plan to leverage everything because I want to get to my next level. It’s just a matter of planning and going after it.”
A Life-Changing Work-Life Balance
Perhaps the most profound change for Gesiane has been cultural. Coming from a different work environment, RELEX’s approach to work-life balance was revelatory.
“After I came to RELEX, I’m not a workaholic anymore because it’s not expected for you to be,” she says. “They expect that you have your working hours. You work during your hours. Your free hours are for you to do whatever you want. And it’s very encouraged.”
Even studying can happen during work hours if it’s relevant to her role. “Whenever I find opportunities to study something related to my job, they say, okay, you can use your work hours to study. For me, that was a little bit surprising because from the culture I came from, it’s different.”
The adjustment took time. But she learned to embrace it: “I already did what I planned to do. So, I could spend a little bit of time with myself and relax.”
The results speak for themselves. “My husband is happier because now we have more time together,” she shares. “When you have time to enjoy your free time, things go so much smoother at work.”
Being Yourself at RELEX
As a Brazilian who has lived in various countries before settling in Finland for the second time, Gesiane brings a global perspective to RELEX. When asked about her favorite company value, she highlights “be yourself” and “be curious” – which for her, go hand in hand.
“Amongst so many different people, you are allowed to be different,” she explains. “Nobody’s expecting you that you’re in the box, that you have to behave like this, that you follow some politics of behavior. Whenever I want to talk, I talk. Whenever I want to be quiet, I’m quiet and nobody will bother me.”
After I came to RELEX, I’m not a workaholic anymore because it’s not expected for you to be.
Her extroverted personality has helped her build connections across departments. “I don’t know, I love talking to everybody. Sometimes when I have free time, I go to my department and I talk to people, I go to the next department, and I talk to people.” This networking has practical benefits: “Whenever an issue arises and I don’t have the answer, I usually know who might, so I can direct others to the right person.”
It has led to some funny moments, too. “People think that I am the manager,” she laughs, recounting times when colleagues assumed she was leading teams because she was “everywhere all the time and talking a lot.”
Why Join RELEX?
When asked what she’d tell someone considering RELEX, Gesiane is enthusiastic. “The company is really open to all kinds of levels of knowledge on the technical side. Background, it totally doesn’t matter. Anyone is welcome if you’re just showing competence and that you can aggregate value. You will be welcome for sure.”
She was drawn to RELEX while job hunting in Finland because she loved the product itself and found the community incredibly diverse. “The main language spoken is English. We have people from literally all around the world. All kinds of nationalities.”
For Gesiane, RELEX represents the perfect combination: meaningful work on complex technical challenges, opportunities for growth and learning, a genuinely diverse and inclusive culture, and, crucially, a healthy work-life balance that lets her thrive both professionally and personally.
“Being RELEX means being myself and doing what I love – working with the cloud, programming, automating, staying curious, and constantly expanding my knowledge. And above all, contributing to something meaningful.”
Outside of work, Gesiane enjoys reading across all genres, practices cross-stitch, and hits the gym for stress relief. And yes, she’s adapted to Finnish culture – she likes black licorice.
