Denmark’s largest online grocery retailer achieves a food waste rate that is one-fifth of the industry benchmark

Nemlig.com, Denmark’s largest online grocery retailer, has reduced its food waste rate by 51% over three years by utilizing RELEX Solutions. Nemlig has used AI-driven forecasting, replenishment, and markdown capabilities from RELEX since 2019, which has supported the results, a rate that is one-fifth of the industry benchmark.

Nemlig operates a distribution center in Brøndby, Denmark which serves private households and business customers via nemlig.com and its app. Managing approximately 10,000 SKUs, including a broad fresh and perishable assortment meant that they faced waste pressures typical of online grocery retailer.

With high promotional volumes and short shelf lives, the need for precise, automated planning is important. RELEX forecasting and replenishment capabilities have been a central part of Nemlig’s infrastructure since 2019, providing the demand accuracy and automated markdown capabilities that allow nemlig to act on near-expiry stock systematically and at speed. RELEX also optimizes safety stock levels to maintain the right balance between product availability and waste exposure, which is a critical consideration when managing perishable assortments.

Nemlig’s 51% reduction in food waste, from 0.8% of revenue in FY 2022/23 to 0.3% in 2024/2025 is the product of Nemlig’s approach to waste prevention alongside a combination of precise demand forecasting, automated markdown execution, and active surplus donation. The markdown functionality reduces the price of products approaching their best-before date and features them prominently in the customer app. It removes the need for manual intervention and reduces the probability of waste at the point where it is hardest to recover.

“For Nemlig, minimizing food waste is a commercial discipline and a responsibility we take seriously,” said Jens Laugesen, Head of Supply Chain Management, Nemlig.com. “Prevention comes first, and that means precise demand forecasting, so the right products arrive in the right quantities. RELEX gives us the planning accuracy and automated markdown tools to act on near-expiry stock before it becomes a problem.”

“Nemlig’s waste performance is exceptional and reflects how deeply demand planning and markdown automation are built into how they operate,” said Tiina Kanninen, SVP Global Customer Success, RELEX Solutions. “We are proud that RELEX forecasting and replenishment have played a direct role in that outcome, and we look forward to supporting Nemlig.com as they continue to scale.”
